I agree that it's a weak response to oppression. However, I disagree that being better didn't save lives. MLK points out in his book that whenever Black Power protesters started violent riots, many more lives were lost in comparison to nonviolent protests. It also leaves white people under the impression that blacks only want violence, which'll lead to more oppression and more laws against them. Which is why being better is the better alternative.
