My issue lies with the fact that yes, the professor was teaching how to work through concepts. However, my underlying problem is the assignments didn't feel like a continuation of what was covered in class. It felt like a completely different concept.

As a teacher myself, I agree that there ought to be a transition of responsibility. However, as you also mentioned, it's expected students who enter graduate school walk in knowing certain concepts. My university accepted multiple people into the program that had no experience in programming whatsoever. I heard from another student who enrolled in the intro course that the professor started asking people if they had any coding experience after I had pointed that out in the end of semester surveys that rate the professor. Several people raised their hand, saying that was the first experience they had with computer science or IT.

If students don't have experience, they probably shouldn't be allowed into the program. I was allowed in and didn't know what I was getting myself into.

I don't aim for hand holding at the graduate level. Rather, I do hope people learn what they're getting themselves into, and if they choose to pursue it anyway, that they learn on their own first before pursuing the degree.
