Teaching is hitting an all-time low. Since the beginning of the school year, my high school has not been able to hire four teachers to teach English. So what do those students do? They’ve had a substitute for the entire semester so far. They haven’t learned how to be a better writer or reader. Yet, we have expectations and goals as a school. How are we supposed to meet them when we don’t have teachers? Those vacancies wouldn’t exist if teachers were respected, trusted, given less responsibilities, and allowed to have more creative freedom in the classroom. Effective teachers scoff when we are told to teach to the test. When we don’t do as we’re told, our higher ups burn us out and drive us to quit. Things need to change if we want effective teachers to stay.
