Why Aren’t School Supplies Recyclable?

How can we teach kids to recycle if markers are single-use?

I run through Expo markers pretty frequently. I love to tell stories while teaching in my classroom, and drawing pictures helps students to visualize the story I’m telling.

Drawing images on the whiteboard helps keep them engaged, as opposed to showing them a picture on PowerPoint. Pictures on a PowerPoint don’t inspire creativity; seeing others draw does.

This is why it disappoints me to find that Expo’s Dry Erase markers aren’t recyclable.

Every time the Expo marker runs out of ink, I fling it into the trash. It saddens me that’s the only option we have for those markers.

When I Google if Expo markers are recyclable or if they have an eco-friendly option available, no related results show up.

It isn’t just Expo that has this problem.

Avery’s Hi-Liter brand of highlighters, the most popular brand used in public schools, also lacks an eco-friendly option and is not recyclable.

That means as soon as one of these products runs out of ink, it gets tossed in the trash.

Why we need eco-friendly options
